Emotional or mental wellbeing

What is it?

Emotional or mental wellbeing generally means how we think and feel about ourselves and our world around us. Several things are considered important to help foster good mental wellbeing and this includes being able to build and maintain good relationships, being able to adapt to changes and having the ability to express a range of emotions. It also incorporates our behaviour and looking after ourselves.

A positive sense of wellbeing which enables an individual to be able to function in society and meet the demands of everyday life; people in good mental health have the ability to recover effectively from illness, change or misfortune. The Mental Health Foundation

Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. The World Health Organization

Why is good mental wellbeing important?

Having the ability to mentally recover from difficulties faced, having resilience has been shown to have a positive effect on an individuals quality of life. Poor emotional wellbeing can have a negative impact on a persons quality of life and affect their physical health too.
