Loss of appetite

The person may lose interest in eating and drinking or may no longer be able to swallow.

Some people lose their sense of smell and taste which also makes food less appealing.

This can be distressing for the relative or carer but the person has less need or desire for food and drink as they near death.

What can you do?

Keeping the persons mouth clean and moist with wet sponges, and lip balm will make them more comfortable.

Continue to offer small amounts of food if appropriate and tolerated by the patient/client. Check that they do not have any known swallowing problems first.
