Acute or sudden attacks of breathlessness: tips for carers
- Acknowledge the patient’s symptoms and their fear.
- Let them recover their breath before speaking. Signs or yes/no answers may be all they can manage.
- Give patient time. Don’t rush.
- Help them to move slowly with a rest between each step of their task.
- Fan: air blowing across the face from an open window or a fan can reduce the sensation of breathlessness.
